OHE is a system of electrification that is used to transmit electrical energy to electric engine/locomotives. Further these electric energy converted into mechanical energy by locomotives/engine. The full form of OHE is ”Overhead Equipment” or ”Overhead Electrification”.
WHY OHE IS MOST IMPORTENT IN RAILWEY?
- Economic approach: – India imports oil approximately 80% of its need. The cost of oil is very high due to importing oil in such large quantities, while the electricity production capacity of India is very high because the coal& water is at the abundant, so the cost of electricity is less than diesel. Because of this, the electrification of the railway is very important.
- Speed of electric engine is more than the diesel engine. Therefore, the electrification of the railway can significantly contribute to the modern India’s economy.
- Diesel engine have very complex parts, so we cannot be maintained easily to Diesel engine’s parts.
That’s why we can say, electric Engine can be easily maintained rather than the diesel engine.
WHAT IS THE PRINCIPAL OF OHE?
Just as our veins carry blood to keep our heart functioning, similarly the Overhead Equipment (OHE) is responsible for supplying electricity to the electric locomotive.
At the substation, power supply is received in three phases, which is then transferred to a single phase 25kv supply through a transformer. This supply is further transmitted to the electric engines with the help of a pantograph. To ensure smooth operation of the electric locomotive, Substation Power (SSP) is installed every 10 to 15 km, and Sectioning Post (SP) is installed every 40 km.
TSS (Traction Sub Station):-
The electricity supply to OHE is received through TSS, Indian Railways brings cases for three phase supply by a private company, this three phase supply is converted into single phase 25 KV through the transformer fitted in TSS.
SP (Sectioning & Parallel Post):-
- SP, works to divide two difference phases through PTFE.
- It also works as a switching station.
- It is stabilized every 40 km from the TSS.
SSP (Sub-Sectioning & Parallel Post):-
- SSP works to boost the voltage, so that the voltage supply does not reduce according to the increasing distance.
- It also works as a switching station.
- It is stabilized approximately 10 to 15 km.
NEUTRAL SECTION (PTFE):-
Neutral section is stabilized near the TSS or SP. It works to divide two difference phases.
